Hand-Carved Libyan Desert Glass Egyptian Scarab – 100 Carats
This extraordinary Egyptian Scarab is carved from rare Libyan Desert Glass, a material formed approximately 29 million years ago by a powerful asteroid impact. This Desert Glass Scarab encapsulates both the ancient Egyptian symbolism of the scarab beetle and a fascinating cosmic origin.
In 1922, archaeologist Howard Carter discovered Tutankhamun's tomb containing a remarkable winged scarab pendant carved from a similar pale greenish-yellow stone. Originally mistaken for chalcedony, this stone was later identified by British geographer Patrick Clayton as Libyan Desert Glass (LDG) during his explorations along the Libya-Egypt border.
Also known as Great Sand Sea Glass, Libyan Desert Glass was created when an intense cosmic impact melted desert sands, with temperatures surpassing 1600°C (2900°F). Embedded with meteorite particles, this unique material bridges Earth's history with celestial events. In Egyptian culture, the scarab beetle symbolizes good fortune, hope, restoration of life, transformation, growth, rebirth, and protection, making this piece a meaningful artifact.
