Hand-Carved Libyan Desert Glass Egyptian Scarab – 101 Carats
This exquisite Egyptian Scarab, hand-carved from rare Libyan Desert Glass, captures both the profound symbolism of the scarab beetle and a unique connection to cosmic history. Libyan Desert Glass was formed approximately 29 million years ago from the intense impact of an asteroid, creating a material unlike any other.
The Winged Scarab Pendant of Tutankhamun, found in King Tutankhamun's tomb by archaeologist Howard Carter in 1922, famously features a scarab carved from a similar pale greenish-yellow stone. Initially thought to be chalcedony, it was later classified by British geographer Patrick Clayton as Libyan Desert Glass (LDG) after his explorations along the Libya-Egypt border.
Also known as Great Sand Sea Glass, Libyan Desert Glass is created by the extreme heat from cosmic impacts, with temperatures exceeding 1600°C (2900°F). The presence of meteorite particles further confirms its extraterrestrial origin. In Egyptian culture, the scarab beetle represents good fortune, hope, restoration of life, transformation, growth, rebirth, and protection, making this piece both a beautiful and meaningful artifact.
