Hand-Carved Libyan Desert Glass Egyptian Scarab – 140 Carats
This remarkable Egyptian Scarab is expertly carved from rare Libyan Desert Glass, a material formed around 29 million years ago by the impact of a powerful asteroid. This Desert Glass Scarab reflects both the ancient symbolism of the scarab beetle and a fascinating cosmic history.
In 1922, archaeologist Howard Carter uncovered Tutankhamun's tomb and discovered a stunning breastplate featuring the god Ra as a winged scarab carved from what was initially believed to be chalcedony. Later, British geographer Patrick Clayton classified the glass-like stone found in the Libyan Desert as Libyan Desert Glass (LDG), linking it to the cosmic impact at the Libya-Egypt border.
Known as Great Sand Sea Glass, Libyan Desert Glass was created by a cosmic impact that melted desert sands at temperatures over 1600°C (2900°F), embedding it with meteorite particles that link it to Earth’s celestial past. In Egyptian culture, the scarab beetle symbolizes good fortune, hope, restoration of life, transformation, growth, rebirth, and protection, making this piece a unique and meaningful artifact.
