Hand-Carved Libyan Desert Glass Egyptian Scarab – From an Asteroid Impact
This exquisite Libyan Desert Glass Egyptian Scarab is meticulously hand-carved from rare Desert Glass, a material created by a powerful asteroid impact approximately 29 million years ago. Inspired by the iconic Winged Scarab Pendant of Tutankhamun, this piece embodies both ancient Egyptian symbolism and cosmic history.
When archaeologist Howard Carter discovered King Tutankhamun's tomb in 1922, he uncovered a remarkable breastplate featuring the god Ra as a winged scarab carrying the sun and moon. This scarab was later identified as Libyan Desert Glass by geographer Patrick Clayton, who discovered similar glass-like material in the Libyan Desert.
Known as Great Sand Sea Glass, Libyan Desert Glass formed when an intense cosmic impact melted desert sands at the Libya-Egypt border, with temperatures surpassing 1600°C (2900°F). The presence of meteorite particles within this glass confirms its extraterrestrial origins, making it a treasured artifact that connects us to Earth's ancient past and the mysteries of the cosmos.
