Hand-Carved Libyan Desert Glass Egyptian Scarab – 187 Carats
This unique Egyptian Scarab is meticulously hand-carved from rare Libyan Desert Glass, a material formed approximately 29 million years ago from a powerful asteroid impact. This Desert Glass Scarab is a symbol of ancient Egyptian beliefs and cosmic history, capturing the essence of both cultural and celestial origins.
The Winged Scarab Pendant of Tutankhamun famously featured a scarab carved from similar Libyan Desert Glass, which was originally thought to be chalcedony by Howard Carter when he discovered the tomb in 1922. Later, British geographer Patrick Clayton identified this glass-like material in the Libyan Desert, classifying it as Libyan Desert Glass (LDG).
This striking glass, known as Great Sand Sea Glass, was created by the intense heat of a cosmic impact that melted the desert sands along the Libya-Egypt border. Temperatures exceeding 1600°C (2900°F) were required to produce this rare glass, which contains embedded meteorite particles—a tangible link to Earth’s ancient past and cosmic events. The scarab beetle is a powerful symbol of good fortune, hope, restoration of life, transformation, growth, rebirth, and protection, making this piece both a meaningful artifact and a collector's treasure.
