Hand-Carved Libyan Desert Glass Egyptian Scarab – From an Asteroid Impact
This magnificent Libyan Desert Glass Egyptian Scarab is a hand-carved tribute to ancient Egyptian artistry and cosmic history. Inspired by the Winged Scarab Pendant of Tutankhamun, this piece is crafted from rare Libyan Desert Glass formed by an asteroid impact, making it a unique addition to any collection of Egyptian symbolic jewelry.
In 1922, archaeologist Howard Carter discovered King Tutankhamun’s tomb filled with artifacts, including a stunning breastplate depicting the god Ra as a winged scarab carrying the sun and moon. This scarab, originally believed to be chalcedony, was later identified as Libyan Desert Glass by geographer Patrick Clayton after he found similar glass-like material in the Libyan Desert.
This extraordinary glass, known as Great Sand Sea Glass, was created approximately 29 million years ago when an intense asteroid impact melted the desert sands at the Libya-Egypt border, reaching temperatures above 1600°C (2900°F). Scientists have since detected meteorite particles within these formations, confirming their cosmic origin.
